Action Location (에서)
에서
에서 marks the location where an action or activity takes place.
Pattern
Place + 에서 + Action Verb
Explanation
The particle 에서 indicates the place where an action happens. While 에 marks static location or destination, 에서 is used when you are doing something at that location.
For example, '도서관에서 공부해요' (I study at the library) uses 에서 because studying is an active verb. Compare this with '도서관에 있어요' (I am at the library), which uses 에 because 있다 describes existence, not an action.
A helpful way to remember the difference: use 에 with existence verbs (있다/없다) and movement verbs (가다/오다), and use 에서 with action verbs (먹다, 공부하다, 일하다, etc.). Additionally, 에서 can also mean 'from' when indicating a starting point: '서울에서 부산까지' (from Seoul to Busan).
